Outline of the process
1. Set up Cyberduck (a WebDAV client) on your computer and use it to download CTools Resources to your desktop.
2. Drag the files or folders to Canvas Files.
Important considerations
- When you migrate a CTools resource, it will not include the resource's metadata, such as who created it, the date created, and date last modified, along with any copyright information.
- If you renamed a resource using the "Actions > Edit Details > Rename" feature in the Resources tool, the filename will revert to the original filename (the name given to it when it was created) when you use Cyberduck. You can rename the file after you move it to your desktop or upload it to Canvas.
- If you have tools in CTools resources that are linked to activities such as assignments, (you can preserve those links by requesting the Convert2Canvas service) from ITS rather than transferring resources to Canvas files yourself.
- You cannot upload resources that are URLs to Canvas. To replace the URLs, we recommend that you open CTools in one browser window and copy each URL from CTools Resources into one of the following locations in Canvas:
- If you want a single list of URLs for your students, create either a document to upload to Files or a Page in Canvas and paste the links there.
- Incorporate the URLs (links) throughout materials that you have in the Canvas Files tool (such as Word docs), or in Canvas Announcements, Pages, Assignments, etc., using the "link" button found throughout Canvas features in the editor.
Download resources from CTools using Cyberduck
Note There must be at least one object (file, folder, etc.) in your site's Resources tool before you begin the setup procedure.
1. To transfer resources, you will need to open multiple browser windows:
- One with the CTools site from which you would like to transfer resources, with the Resources tool open.
- One with the Canvas course to which you will upload files, with the Files tool open.
- If you do not already have Cyberduck (a WebDAV click) on your Mac, you'll need a third browser window to download it. (Instructions below.)
2. In the CTools Resources tool, along the top of the main window, click Upload/Download Multiple Resources.
In a yellow-orange box, you'll see a long URL. Keep this window open or copy the URL to another location. You'll refer back to it in Step 9, below.
3. If you don't already have Cyberduck, download it at: http://cyberduck.en.softonic.com/mac
- Double-click the downloaded .zip file to decompress it. (Your Mac may be set up to automatically decompress the file while downloading.)
- Drag the Cyberduck app to your Applications folder.
4. Open Cyberduck.
5. Click the Open Connection icon in the upper-left corner of the Cyberduck window.
6. In the top drop-down menu A choose WebDAV (HTTP/SSL).
7. In the "Server" field, copy and paste the URL from the orange-yellow box (from Step 2, above).
8. For the "Port" type 443
9. Type your username and password.
(If it won't let you, uncheck the "Anonymous Login" box.)
10. Click Connect.
The Cyberduck window will display the resources in your CTools site.
12. Drag and drop items that you will upload to Canvas from this Cyberduck window to your desktop or to a folder on your desktop.
Drag the files and folders to Canvas Files
1. Position your browser so you can see and access the downloaded Resource files on your desktop, as well as the open Files tool in Canvas.
2. To upload folders, they must first be compressed (zipped). Select a folder to highlight it and choose Compress "filename" in the Finder's File menu. Files do not need to be compressed.
3. Drag files and compressed folders to the Canvas Files window.
Files and compressed folders must first be dragged to your desktop and from there dragged to Canvas.
When the upload begins, you'll be given the option to either expand the compressed folder, or you can choose to expand it after it has uploaded.
An alternate method is to use the upload button in the upper-right corner of the Canvas Files window.
