Network Speed Test: Test Wired Connection Speeds

Overview

On the Ann Arbor campus most locations have 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) Ethernet connections. Some have 10Mbps and 100 Mbps connections. Upload and download speeds do not often reach the peak theoretical capacity of the network connection. (For example: on a 1000 Mbps connection, normal upload and download speeds will be in the 600-800 Mbps range.) To test a wired connection, follow the instructions below.

On a Mac

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Select the Hardware tab.
  5. Review the Speed field.

On Windows

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Windows Menu.
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Select Change Adapter Settings.
  4. Double-click Local Area Connection to open the Connection Status pane.
  5. Review the Speed field.
